Something that just occurred to me...

Something that just occurred to me (along with the fact that I haven’t posted anything on this blog of mine for quite some time, if you’ve seen other posts of mine you’ll know I’m scatterbrained) is that I have no explanation written as to why my blog is called Thought Corridor.

Now, people who know me will know that I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. Holmes (I am going to do a blog about my long running love for this character on another day) has a memory technique that he uses, it is not unique to him of course, called a mind palace. The general idea with a mind palace is that a person is able to remember a long string of information by plotting it around a real or fictional place. That all sounds a little convoluted but in simple terms it means that if I had a random list of objects that I wanted to remember, then I would remember them by placing the objects in a room/rooms of my house. It doesn’t have to be a house it could be a street, shop or a theatre etc, as long as it’s a place that you can imagine (real or imaginary) so I will list five objects that I want to remember (and these will be random for this example) a lawnmower, a pencil, a fan, a monkey, and a top hat. Next I would imagine placing these items around my home. So in my case I would pick a room to start and maybe it’s the kitchen, and begin to visualise these objects interacting with each other in the kitchen. Here goes...in the kitchen there is a lawnmower by the table, on the table is a pencil, I pick up the pencil and use the pencil to start the lawnmower this then causes the fan of the lawnmower to start turning and a monkey walks in wearing a top hat and he rides the lawnmower out of the kitchen. In order to remember the a list of items then that random image would need to be made very clear in your head so that you could remember those items and by remembering one item it would then lead you onto the next item and so on and so on. That isn’t the most clear explanation but it’s the best I can come up with. So my point is Holmes has a mind palace, a huge place where he can store all the information he needs and is able to access it very easily by walking through this palace. I on the other have do not have a brain anywhere as big as Holmes’ so instead of a mind palace I have Thought Corridor.

I think my next post will talk about a sketch comedy group that I really like and the next after that will talk about my long-standing love for Sherlock Holmes.

Take care of yourself and I’ll speak to you soon.
